About OC Drive
OC Drive is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization that collaborates with community non-profits to help serve our children and youth. We aim to provide fun opportunities for families to practice kindness together.
We believe that learning about giving and helping others gives children a feeling of empowerment and making the act of giving a family activity is a great way to reinforce charitable values. It is especially important to teach our youth that they are part of a larger community and that we are all responsible for those around us. By giving the value of charity a central role in the family dynamic, we can encourage our children to grow up with a healthy sense of compassion and a strong charitable spirit.
Our events are wonderful opportunities to encourage everyone in our household to celebrate the joy of generosity while learning about the strength of empathy and teaching our children about social responsibility.
Teaching kids about giving can be rewarding for both parents and the children. We know, because we are also parents. Let’s practice kindness together.
OC Drive | Our Children. Our Cause.
The story behind the official founding of OC Drive as an 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization dates back to early 2016. Inspired by what friend and OC Drive supporter Sean Lee was doing with his Purist Group’s annual toy drive event in Los Angeles, the spark of action lit within the hearts and minds a few determined Orange County business leaders to find a way to brighten the holidays for the many deserving children who were struggling in less-fortunate circumstances within their own cities. “Let’s do it!” they said. Thus, the plan began to host a Winter Toy Drive supporting Orange County’s youth.
While the story leading to the founding of the org may have started in early 2016, the history of the passion behind it goes back even further, to moments in the lives of each of its founders. Our organization’s founders — Jayce Yenson of Saigon City Marketplace, Gary Nguyen of 24/7 Care at Home, and Sonny Nguyen of 7 Leaves Cafe — each bring their personal experiences, dedication and commitment to giving back to the community. Between them they shared the belief, “We have been blessed much, while there are others, especially children, who aren’t as fortunate.” They would look at their own children, blessed with the material gifts that they could provide as parents, and recognized that as parents they could do much better. They saw that teaching their children the values of compassion and responsibility for others would be one of the biggest gifts they could give their own children in life. So the idea of the Winter Toy Drive became the “vehicle” for providing an opportunity to not only show their family, but for other parents & families to show their children the kindness and generosity behind supporting a cause. It’s about “Our Children”. It’s about “Our Cause”.
With the first Winter Toy Drive in 2016, this group of founders, along with the help of other community & business leaders including Tam Nguyen and David Truong, and organizations including the Purist Group, successfully put on the Winter Toy Drive with an exotic car show as the centerpiece entertainment. “We found a vacant parking lot in Huntington Beach that the owner was gracious enough to allow to host that event,” says Sonny. That event netted a few hundred toys that were distributed to local children’s organizations. “The event was fantastic and it was all centered on giving. No politics, no agendas. It was all about how can we make this a success so that we can put a smile on a child’s face.”
The quality and success of the 2016 event struck awe in one event guest in particular, the Mayor of the City of Garden Grove, Steve Jones. “I have got to have this event in Garden Grove!” was Mayor Jones’s feedback to the group. So in 2017 the 2nd Annual Winter Toy Drive came to life on the Historic Main St. of Garden Grove. Now doubled in size, the entertainment and participation across the board was stunning. The drive netted over 1500 toys and solidified the Winter Toy Drive as an annual event.
In 2018, the founders made the formalization of the organization official, and OC Drive was born. Each year, OC Drive will look to continue the tradition of the Winter Toy Drive, and further build out more opportunities, or “drives”, to give back and make the practice of “giving” a family activity.
We hope that you will join us on this magnificent ride.
